That OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 8 “Dark Side of the Moon”, that’s a mouthful, ain’t it? Sounds like some fancy space thing. Well, my grandson, he’s always on that computer thing, he showed me. He says it’s a watch. A real fancy, expensive watch.

He kept going on and on about this “Dark Side of the Moon” thing. Sounds spooky to me. Like something out of one of those scary movies. But he says it’s about that Apollo 8 mission. You know, them astronauts going around the moon. He showed me some pictures. Black and white, kinda blurry. But I guess it was a big deal back then. We only had that little black and white TV, so we watched it on that. Hard to see.

This watch, it’s black. All black. Like the night sky, I guess. He says it’s made of some special stuff. Ceramic, he called it. Sounds like them fancy plates my neighbor used to have. But I reckon this is tougher. He says it won’t scratch easy. Good, cause my old watch, the one with the stretchy band, it got all scratched up from working in the garden.

He says this OMEGA Speedmaster is real special. They only made a certain number of ’em. Limited edition, he called it. Like them collector plates they sell on the TV. He says people will pay a lot of money for these watches. Thousands! Can you believe it? For a watch! I told him, “Boy, you could buy a whole cow for that kind of money!”

He showed me on that computer where you can buy these things. “Purchasing”, he called it. I don’t know, I like going to the store myself and having the cash in my hand. Feels more real. But you know these young folks, everything’s done on that computer thingy. Says it’s faster, easier. Maybe it is. I can buy the best eggs at the grocery store, though. I can feel the quality of the eggs. He said he bought other stuff on the computer thingy. But it’s usually not so good. My eyes are good though.

This OMEGA, it’s got all these little dials and buttons on it. Looks complicated to me. My old watch, it just had the two hands. Easy to read. This one, it’s got so much going on, I don’t know how you’d tell the time! But my grandson, he says it’s got all these features. Stopwatch, he called one of them. Like for timing races, I guess. He showed me how it works. Press this button here, press that one there. Too much for me. This new watch seems complicated. I like the old one better, just showing the time. Easy to understand.

  • OMEGA Speedmaster Apollo 8: This thing is the main attraction, I guess.
  • Dark Side of the Moon: That’s what they call it. Sounds kinda spooky, don’t it?
  • Purchasing: That’s how my grandson says you buy it. On that computer thing.
  • Black watch: Looks like it is just all black, like the night sky.
  • Expensive: Thousands! That is a lot of money.

He says this watch, it’s like wearing a piece of history. ‘Cause of that Apollo 8 thing. I guess that’s kinda neat. But it’s still a lot of money for a watch. He told me it might be 500 dollars, might be 35,000 dollars! I don’t know what makes a watch so expensive! It’s just so much! 3869 or 3861, those are some numbers on the watch he showed me. He said it is some laser thingy on the watch dial, looks like the moon. So I guess it looks like the moon on your hand.

I remember when them astronauts went up there. It was a big deal. Everyone was talking about it. We were all glued to that little TV screen. Now, they got watches that remind you of it. Times sure have changed.

My grandson, he wants one of these OMEGA Speedmaster watches real bad. He keeps showing me pictures, talking about it. I told him, “Save your money, boy. Buy something practical.” But he’s got his heart set on it. Says it’s an investment. Like buying land, I guess. But a lot smaller. And a lot more expensive, for the size of it. I don’t know. I think it is a waste of money. But it is his money, I guess.

If he wants to spend his money on a fancy watch, that’s his business. I just hope he doesn’t regret it later. There’s more important things in life than a fancy watch. Like family, and good health, and a good meal on the table. Those are the things that really matter. He will learn about that in the future. He is too young to know this now.

But I guess if it makes him happy, then who am I to judge? It’s his life. He can buy all the fancy watches he wants. As long as he’s happy, that’s all that matters. I will still tell him to save money though. And eat more vegetables. Maybe this watch can help him with that too. Probably not.
