Okay, so, I recently decided to get my hands dirty and remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001, and let me tell you, it was quite the ride. I managed to find a similar hinge and, with a bit of tinkering, got it to fit perfectly.
The whole process took me a couple of months, working on it during my free time. There were moments of frustration, sure, like when I scratched the case and had to polish it out, or when I dropped a tiny screw and spent an hour looking for it. But there were also moments of pure joy, like when I finally got the movement working smoothly.
The Result
In the end, I had a watch that looked remarkably like the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001. It wasn’t an exact replica, of course, but it captured the essence of the original. The yellow gold case, the champagne dial, the smooth sweep of the second hand – it all came together beautifully. And the best part? I made it with my own two hands.
Would I do it again? Probably not anytime soon. It was a lot of work, and honestly, there are days when I just want to wear the watch without thinking about all the effort that went into it. But I learned a lot, and I have a unique timepiece that I’m really proud of. Plus, now I can say I’ve made a “Patek Philippe” – well, sort of.
